Respect the Terps

What are Terpenes, and what do Terpenes do in cannabis?

Terpenes are natural compounds found in many plants and animals. Like in most plants, cannabis terpenes are responsible for the smell and taste. Cannabis terpenes also add to the effects - you may even find terps more important than total cannabinoids when it comes to finding your favorite strains. Here's a couple common cannabis terpenes, and their typical effects:

  • Myrcene. Smells: Earthy, floral, cloves. Effect: Anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxant, sedative. Also Found in hops, lemon grass and mango!

  • Limonene: Smells: Lemon, citrus, orange. Effect: Anti-depressant, Antifungal, gastroprotective, immunostimulant. Also found in citrus rinds, juniper and peppermint.

  • Caryophyllene. Smells: Pepper, wood, spice. Effects: Anti-inflammatory, Protects gastro lining cells, Anti-depressant, Anti-septic. Also found in: Black pepper, Thai basil and cloves.

  •  Linalool. Smells: Floral, sweet, citrus. Effect: Anti-convulsant, anti-epileptic, sedative. Also found in: Lavendar, laurel, and mints.

  • A-Pinene. Smells: Pine, wood, mountain air. Anti-inflammatory, gastroprotective, energy booster, aids memory. Also found in: Pine needles, orange peels and parsley.

These are just a few of the many terpenes you will run into when checking out cannabis. Researching terpenes is a great way to better understand your favorite strains, and find new ones to try.
